The whole point of Project Ara is choice. Google’s modular smartphone will let you customize everything from your battery size to camera, and this week the company revealed a few of the mobile processors it plans to offer for the revolutionary new handset.
Google is working with both NVIDIA and Marvell on chips for the new smartphone. Specifically, the modular handset will make use of NVIDIA’s screaming fast Tegra K1 processor and Marvell’s 64-bit PXA1928 chip. Modified versions of both processors, along with the previously announced Rockchip AP, should be ready by Spring 2015.
The company also offered a general update on its progress, noting that the Spiral 2prototype arrived in Mountain View last week and seems to work despite a fair amount of lag. Meanwhile, Google says the latest design is “beautiful” and promises to show it off to the public next month at an upcoming Developers Conference.
It’s still unclear exactly when Project Ara will get an official launch, though we’re definitely expecting something before the end of 2015. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too much longer to get our hands on Google’s first modular smartphone.
