Launched back in 2012, the credit card-sized PC attracted quite a bit of attention due to its $35 price and potential ability to encourage programming with children. Today, it was revealed that\u00a0<strong>over 5 million units of Raspberry Pi have been sold to date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just confirmed the big news we\u2019ve all been waiting for: we\u2019ve now sold more than 5 million Raspberry Pis.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Raspberry Pi (@Raspberry_Pi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Raspberry_Pi\/status\/567708532334530560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The news was followed by:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We think that this means that in just under 3 years, we\u2019ve gone from zero to being the biggest selling UK computer manufacturer ever. As to how many units for each model was sold, the Raspberry Pi foundation, which spoke to\u00a0<a title=\"The Verge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/2\/17\/8052037\/over-5-million-raspberry-pis-have-been-sold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Verge<\/a>, said that about 3 million units of the original Raspberry Pi, named Model B, were sold. Meanwhile, the Model B+ sold around 1.5 million since its release back in July 2014, with about 100,000 to 150,000 units sold of the Model A and Model A+ units. As for the Pi 2, which was\u00a0<a title=\"Pi 2 announced\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maximumpc.com\/raspberry_pi_2_supports_windows_10_iot_gets_cooking_faster_hardware_2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0two weeks ago, it accounts for 500,000 of the overall sales.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation went on to say that it estimates that the units sold are split between the PCs being purchased for educational, industrial, and hobbyist use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pi 2 sells 500,000 units since launch It is hard to believe that the\u00a0Raspberry Pi\u00a0has been around for three years already.
