Taylor Swift has already\u00a0made her feelings about music streaming services pretty clear, and blocked Apple Music from offering her hit new album 1989<\/em>. But in a new blog post, the singer labels the service \u201cshocking, disappointing, and completely unlike\u201d Apple.<\/p>\n

Despite describing Apple as \u201cone of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans,\u201d Swift is unhappy\u00a0with the company\u2019s\u00a0three-month free trial for Apple Music, which allows new users to enjoy\u00a0as much music as they like without paying a single penny.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service,\u201d Swift writes. \u201cI\u2019m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Shake It Off\u00a0<\/em>singer adds that the rant \u201cis not about me,\u201d but about\u00a0new artists and bands who have just been given their big break and thought \u201cthat the royalties from that would get them out of debt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field,\u201d Swift continues, \u201cbut will not get paid for a quarter of a year\u2019s worth of plays on his or her songs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift insists that every other artist, writer, and producer in her social circles feels the same way about Apple Music\u2019s free trial, but adds many are afraid to speak out because\u00a0they \u201cadmire and respect Apple so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite her strong feelings about the move, Swift admires Apple\u2019s goal of getting users to pay for music streaming \u2014 unlike many rival services, which offer completely free plans. But she adds that a company with Apple\u2019s resources should be able to compensate music creators for their work \u2014 even if the user is enjoying it free for a limited time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this could be the platform that gets it right,\u201d Swift concludes. \u201cBut I say to Apple with all due respect, it\u2019s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no doubt that Apple Music\u2019s three-month trial period will persuade tens of millions of people to sign up for the service \u2014 and to switch from rival streaming services. And a good percentage of those will go on to pay the $9.99 monthly fee to continue using it.<\/p>\n

It will almost certainly make Apple Music the largest music streaming service in an incredibly short space of time, then, and in the long run, that\u2019s only going to benefit music creators. A recent report revealed 71.5% of Apple Music revenue will be paid straight to music owners.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not too difficult to see why creators aren\u2019t too happy about having to offer their work for free in the meantime to make\u00a0Apple Music a quick success. \u201cWe don\u2019t ask you for free iPhones,\u201d Swift says.
