The company has used a popular treat name before—Android K was Kit Kat—so today’s announcement was expected.

Oreo is one of the most recognizable names in the food industry, making Google’s decision all the more safe. Besides, what other desert was the company going to choose? Oatmeal isn’t exactly looked upon with the same reverence as a bag of Oreos.

We can likely expect plenty of promotional tie-ins as Google attempts to get the word out. Hey, our new mobile software has a name! as Jimmy crams his face with cookies. Is an Oreo even a cookie? Or is it technically a sandwich? That’s a debate for another day.

If you aren’t up to speed with what’s new in Android Oreo, the software improves notifications, a tweaked launcher design, support for picture-in-picture, and more. You can read about the software’s best features in the link down below.

As to when you’ll be able to get your hands on the final release, it’s complicated. Android 8.0 Oreo will be uploaded to the Android Open Source Project today, with updates being carrier tested for the Pixel, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. It’s unclear, however, when an OTA will be available.

SOURCE: ANDROID

And the name of Android O is… Android Oreo.
