Despite having a strong start, many gamers found themselves quickly bored of the randomly-generated worlds and frustrated by the lack of multiplayer \u2013 something game director Sean Murray hinted at during development. Now the game is getting a huge update that promises to be a dream come true for lapsed\u00a0<em>No Man\u2019s Sky<\/em>\u00a0fans. Finally,\u00a0<em>No Man\u2019s Sky<\/em>\u00a0is getting proper, full-fat multiplayer just in time for its release on Xbox One.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a post to Microsoft\u2019s Xbox Wire, Hello Games lead Sean Murray offered up some hint of what we can expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are busily working on Next for No Man\u2019s Sky, but wanted to share a little news from behind-the-scenes. Today, we\u2019re letting people know that you\u2019ll be able to play No Man\u2019s Sky as a full multiplayer experience with your friends in Next,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>\n<p>The team has been playtesting multiplayer for six months and Murray says we can expect a pretty different experience than the one\u00a0<em>No Man\u2019s Sky<\/em>\u00a0players are used to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, you\u2019ll be able to explore the universe with your friends, or bump into random travelers. You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive,\u201d Murray continued. \u201cTiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players. Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies. Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The multiplayer, part of the game\u2019s upcoming update, entitled \u201cNext\u201d will likely hit PlayStation 4 and PC at or near the same time the game launches on Xbox One. When it hits Xbox One, though, Xbox gamers can look forward to the content of all the major updates so far as well as the \u201cNext\u201d update.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"twothird\">\n<p>Murray hints in the post that there\u2019s more to the update than multiplayer, but that alone promises to be huge. His description of the multiplayer aspect reminds me of\u00a0<em>Sea of Thieves<\/em>, another content-lite game saved by its multiplayer aspect. I\u2019ve poured tens of hours into\u00a0<em>Sea of Thieves<\/em>\u00a0thanks to the time I\u2019ve spent crewed up with friends.<\/p>\n<p>I said before the game launched in 2016 that exploration on its own only holds so much sway over players. You can only see so may new things before they all start looking the same. If you\u2019re in league with some fellow explorers, though, you\u2019re on an adventure that isn\u2019t about exploration, but is instead facilitated by exploration.
