A “strategic” partnership between NFL and YouTube has been announced, finally bringing (official) game highlights to the largest video platform in existence. Even more importantly, the new partnership will make content available to more people across the globe, heightening the profile of the NFL. The league has been working toward growing its fanbase across the pond, playing a number of games in London this past season. Today’s move is part of that overall strategy to dominate the sport’s world.
The channel can be found at—you guessed it—youtube.com/nfl. There viewers will get a unique “seven-day-a-week” NFL programming schedule, which will include game previews, in-game highlights, post-game recaps, and even fantasy football advice. If you’re a die-hard fan, you’ll definitely want to subscribe as soon as possible. With the Super Bowl this upcoming Sunday, the timing is perfect to launch now.
In addition to the NFL getting its own high-profile YouTube channel, game highlights and other content will be available right through Google Search. In the run up to this weekend’s game, the NFL says it has plans to fill its new channel with top plays, game recaps, and other reflections from the 2014 season; previews and other “sights and sounds from Arizona” are set to hit the channel soon, too.
“Partnering with YouTube and Google provides the NFL unique access to millions of highly engaged fans through the global leader in video and search,” said Hans Schroeder, Senior Vice President, Media Strategy, Business Development & Sales for the NFL. “We continue to see an insatiable appetite for digital video content, and this partnership further expands fans’ ability to discover and access NFL content throughout the year.”
It’s baffling it took the NFL this long to realize YouTube is a good home for highlights and other content, but better late than never I suppose.
