Nikon has announced a fresh new DX-format DSLR, called the D5500, along with a couple of new Nikkor lenses. The new lightweight camera offers a ton of great features for those looking to get into the world of DSLRs, including built-in Wi-Fi, a 3.2-inch Vari-angle touchscreen LCD display, and a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor. Nikon says the camera sports a new “monocoque design,” which promises to make the entry-level camera lighter and more portable than previous offerings. Great for toting around during your backpacking trip in Europe, and it’ll be very durable.

For beginners, the D5500 features easy menu navigation for an intuitive experience. Users will have the ability to choose focus points via Touch AF, pinch in to check focus, and even activate the shutter with a single press. There’s also a new Fn (Function) touch feature that gives users quick and easy one-touch access to settings like AF point selection, aperture, ISO sensitivity and more. Couple all of this with the Vari-angle screen, and you have a pretty flexible and powerful experience.

The camera also features a 39-point autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors, which means the DF5500 will be able to pick up on fast-moving subjects no problem. That’s great for parents who want to snap pictures of their athlete kid, or maybe even for folks who simply want to capture wildlife. There’s even a 3D Tracking feature to track a moving subject—that allows users to simply kick back and press the shutter.

In addition to its imaging capabilities, the Nikon DF5500 can also shoot Full HD 1080p video at 60fps, with a ton of controls for more creative video. Nikon also announced two NIKKOR lenses, a 55-200mm and 300MM for those nature shots I was talking about. The DF5500 will be available in early February for $999.95 with the standard NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens, or with the AF-S NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for $1,199.95. You can pick the camera up body-only for $899.95; the NIKKOR 55-200mm lens is $349.95, and the 300mm lens is $1,999.95.
