Xbox Japan Boss Takashi Sensui has resigned from his post in the shadow of disappointing Xbox One sales in his home country, as reported by Famitsu. He will continue to remain employed with the company at the Microsoft Redmond headquarters as General Manager for the Interactive Entertainment Business, but his term as Chief Executive comes to an end after taking the job in 2006.

While no official reason has been given for his resignations, it goes without saying that the Xbox One’s dismal launch figures had some role in it. I don’t think its wrong to assume that most believed the Xbox One would show weak numbers in Japan, but for it to be the worst console launch in 15 years was a little overkill. To date, it has only shipped a total of 38,461 since September, with 23,562 of those coming in the first four days.

By comparison, the Wii U was able to ship 308,ooo units and the PlayStation 4 managed 322,000 both in just two days, putting their day two figures to ten times that of the Xbox One’s three month figures. Last week, just 776 consoles found their way into Japanese homes.

In October, Sensui issued a statement on the sales figures, believing that the console had the potential to do better.

It’s not as though we’re satisfied with the current sales state. We hope to continue through taking user feedback and improving [the Xbox One] and offering content that everyone can enjoy. We are also aware that reaching out to let more people know about the Xbox One is vital. However, the current console generation has become very long. We hope to lay out a long-term vision and to focus on publicity for our console. Taking the first step was very important, and as for how to permeate the market from here, we hope to continue to do our best.

Famitsu reports that he will be replaced by Yoshinami Takahashi, a 25 year veteran from Sony from way back in the days before the original PlayStation.
