Metal was introduced during WWDC 2014, last year, to help accelerate games on iOS. Now it’s coming to Mac, Apple confirmed during WWDC 2015.

Metal for Mac will replace OpenGL so apps run natively on top of Metal, which Apple says should help reduce rendering times by 50 percent, reduce CPU loads by 40 percent and improve battery life. Adobe said it will adopt Metal for its OS X apps moving forward.

This should be great news for folks who rely on graphics performance in OS X apps, but will require developers to adopt the platform.
