Sprint on Tuesday announced its new “Open World” plan add-on, which is free for current customers and provides low-fee international calls and texts to more than 180 countries, in addition to free calls and texts to Mexico and Canada. It also offers some data, though not a lot, in case you travel frequently to those destinations.

With Sprint Open World, you’ll have access to roaming in 34 countries, too. If you end up in Canada or Mexico, you’ll get 1GB of free 3G data before Sprint begins to charge $30 per GB — billed in “MB” increments. Roaming in those 34 aforementioned countries will cost you 20 cents/minute for voice calls, while text messages are free and data will cost you $30 for each GB. Calls to the Dominican Republic start at 5 cents a minute.

Sprint calls the “Open World” plans an add-on, so you probably need to call or walk into a store to add it to your account, though it’s advertised as “free,” so it shouldn’t cost you anything. The news follows on the heels of T-Mobile’s “Mobile without Borders” initiative, which provides free coverage in Mexico and Canada, too (if you add it to a qualifying account.)
