Bethesda is one of those rare, older American publishers; it’s been around forever, it moves at a tortoise-like speed. Games are released when they’re done, and they are, more often than not, single player. The studio is looking to ramp things up, though, as they demonstrated at E3 this year with a big showing from many of their internal studios.

Bethesda’s marketing head Pete Hines confirmed as much speaking to MCV this week.

While the studio isn’t rushing to get there, it’s something they want to build to: “We’re not thinking ‘what if we did 8 or 10 games a year?’ That’s just not how we do things. I don’t think it’s necessarily the case that we are doing okay with seven studios but if it was 14 we could do twice as much.”

Those three or four big titles don’t even include some of Bethesda’s more recent efforts to branch out, like the Fallout Shelter mobile game and the announced Elder Scrolls digital card game.

The biggest hurdle for the publisher to overcome is that none of their titles is a yearly title. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – but it does suggest that pulling in more studios will be part of their strategy. With Dishonored, Bethesda published the original and then brought the studio internal for the second, and that seems like a likely strategy moving forward. With Bethesda’s focus on quality so far – Dishonored, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Fallout, Elder Scrolls and even to a lesser degree The Evil Within all acting as past proof – I’m looking forward to seeing what they do in the next few years.
