The creator of Bitcoin has, for as long as I can remember, been known as a secret “Satoshi Nakamoto” character. Newsweek thought it found the actual “Satoshi Nakamoto” two years ago, with a major cover story that turned out to be untrue.
Various news outlets, including Gizmodo and Wired, started tracking a man named Dr. Craig Wright last year and, now, Wright has stepped from the shadows, claiming he is indeed the person who creatd Bitcoin.
Wright revealed his identity to several news outlets including BBC and was seemingly able to confirm his identity using Bitcoin keys. “Mr. Wright digitally signed messages using cryptographic keys created during the early days of Bitcoin’s development,” BBC explained, noting that no person other than the founder would likely have those keys. “These are the blocks used to send 10 bitcoins to Hal Finney in January [2009] as the first bitcoin transaction,” Wright told the news outlet.
Wright admits that there were others who “helped” him create the cryptocurrency; and folks from the community speaking to BBC have agreed that Wright is indeed the creator of Bitcoin. But some people still aren’t convinced Wright is the… right… guy.
For them, the investigation will continue. For the rest of us, the buck stops with Wright.
