The Xbox One was the king of November according to this month’s NPD report. Breaking a ten month winning streak held by Sony’s PlayStation 4, Microsoft was able to counter its strategy this month with a $50 discount throughout the holiday shopping season and several irresistible bundle offers.

Microsoft was quick to respond to the news, making a statement through IGN.

November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK. Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the US than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally.

In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community.

Indeed, for as impressive as the PlayStation Experience was this past weekend, that was a setup for 2015. In regards to what was available in 2014, the Xbox One offered far better exclusive content with games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Forza Horizon 2. Combined with the price drop throughout the holiday season, it was clearly the better choice between the two consoles.

Still not as good as the Wii U though.

NPD also released the top 10 games of the month, and as expected, Call of Duty andGrand Theft Auto V dominated. Super Smash Bros. was also able to hang with the big shots, taking third place.

  1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (360, XBO, PS4, PS3, PC)
  2. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  3. Super Smash Bros. (NWU, 3DS)
  4. Madden NFL 15 (360, XBO, PS4, PS3)
  5. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
  6. Far Cry 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
  7. Pokemon Omega Ruby (3DS)
  8. NBA 2K15 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
  9. Assassin’s Creed: Unity (PS4, XBO, PC)
  10. Halo: The Master Chief Collection (XBO)

Overall, both software and hardware saw an 11 percent decline from last year with software dropping $17 million and hardware dropping $294 million. I had expected from day one that this holiday line-up wasn’t particularly impressive, and it seems that the financial reports agree. Here’s to a better holiday in 2015.
