Earlier this year the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) joined forces to take on the competition. Now the two groups are making things official with plans to merge completely by mid-2015. The news brings the number of competing players down from three to two, with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and its popular Qi standard as the only remaining competitor.

The newly formed organization will get a new name, which should be announced in the near future. The two groups will also combine all efforts, and share any partnerships they’ve set up in the past. That includes relationships with AT&T, Qualcomm, Samsung and Powermat, which recently rolled out charging stations at 200 Starbucks locationsaround the U.S.

The news should mean more devices with built-in wireless charging and better chargers later this year. PMA offers the inductive charging technology used at Starbucks, while A4WP’s resonant technology lets you charge multiple gadgets from a single pad. Hopefully we’ll see those charging methods combined in future products.
